Jeff had asked over dinner last night about the intensity of the New Madrid quakes of 1811-12. My 1968 Britannica didn't have the data, but this page does.
And people wonder why the first national center for earthquake engineering research was located in Buffalo, New York, and not California. (A second one was opened at the University of Southern California, after UB president Steven Sample took the president's job at USC.)
