Auditioning Guitars

billroperOk, that was interesting.
I've been wondering if there was anything that could be done to improve the rhythm guitar which I recorded on my last album, Seven Miles a Second, when I go to record the next album, Falling Toward Orion. I recorded it using my Taylor 710, which is a cedar-topped guitar and which normally sounds pretty good, but the mics didn't like it as much as I'd hoped. daisy_knotwise and I headed off to the basement to do some recording.
The candidates were a used Collings, a used Goodall, my Taylor 710, my Guild spruce-top, and Gretchen's guitar, Roger the Yamaha, with a laminate top. I recorded the same song five times using the same mic and then we A/Bd the results. I pushed buttons so that Gretchen didn't know what was what.
Gretchen quickly identified Roger as sounding the dullest, which wasn't a surprise. For a $125 guitar, it's a fine guitar. The Taylor was the brightest. The Guild had the best sound overall. (Of course, they also had new strings.)
Worst case, I'm likely to lay down rhythm tracks for the next album with the Guild.
