Over lunch today, I ducked over to the Guitar Works and looked at several expensive guitars, trying to decide if they're good enough -- or I'm good enough -- to notice the difference between them and my Taylor 710 cedar top.

I don't know. But they sure do sound pretty. And Terry's offered to let me take them home and try recording with them to see if they sound better on tape than my current selection of instruments.

There are advantages to having been a customer for 20 years. :)

... how much are you thinking of spending on your new guitar (and are you going to keep your Taylor?) ... just curious ...

... not that I have been good this week ... bought a carbon fibre topped ovation 12 string Adamas on ebay two nights ago (aiiieee) so I now have to start selling off some of the other ones (this will be my fourth Ovation 12 string (or maybe 3.5th!), which is at least one too many, possibly two!)

Eeek, a lot of people who play Taylor/Martin/Lowden etc. won't touch an Ovation, but I do like how they play when doing louder strummed guitar and the better the guitar the more versatile I find it ...

... and I do like Ovations plugged in ...

... only have two six strings, three 12 strings, one double neck (6/12), one acoustic bass, one semi-acoustic jazz and a mandolin (so far ... gulp!)

Well, nothing's happened yet. And probably won't for a bit. But I'm looking.

I'm going to keep the Taylor in any case, because I like it a lot. I'm also trying to decide if I need to change the type of string I'm using (which is a lot cheaper than a new guitar).

The guitars I'm currently looking at are a used Goodall ($2.5K) and a used Collings ($3.0K). Those are both pretty intimidating figures. But I could do it if I'm convinced it's a good idea.

I know that some people like Ovations. My personal experience is that they just sound a bit off to me. But that's me and doesn't necessarily apply to everyone. I'm not overly fond of Martins either.

The current guitar collection in our house includes my Taylor, my Baby Taylor, my Guild 6, my Guild 12, Frankenbass (a mutant electric baritone guitar set up a full octave down), my Gibson Les Paul electric, a Squier bass for studio use (which I don't play), Gretchen's Yamaha dreadnought (Roger), Gretchen's smaller Sigma 6 (Gracie), and Gas (a classical guitar of dubious usefulness that belonged to Gretchen's Mom). This doesn't count the currently non-working Unisynth, which is the Hammond chord organ of guitars. :)
