Catching Up
Jan. 6th, 2025 10:25 pmIt was back to work today for what is going to be an short week, as I'm scheduled to head off for GAFilk on Thursday, assuming that the weather doesn't go completely to crap. So far, the forecast is good. I have way too many things to do and the month of January is going to be a complete mess. But I'm making progress.
In the meantime, I have too many things to finish up at home. This includes tomorrow's ultrasound to check on how things are after last summer's lithotripsy.
And packing. And updating software. And inventory. And...
Whee!

Shoveling On
Dec. 17th, 2024 10:36 pmI am currently in a stage of a project at work where I am flinging around code madly. This is actually a major improvement over staring at it and wondering how I'm going to sort this out, as the sorting out is better than the staring. But the number of compile errors is large and will continue to be large until the rearrangement is complete.
I still haven't decided which days I'm taking off for Christmas break. The company shuts down in the U.S. between Christmas and New Year's Day, so those are a given, but I expect to take a few more days off around the holiday. I'm also taking three days off for GAFilk and a day for Confusion, so there's a lot of vacation time in the near future, which means that getting more work done is a fine idea.
Tomorrow. :)

This and That
Nov. 13th, 2024 11:00 pmI have finally caught up on sleep following Windycon. This required severely oversleeping this morning. Oops. But I'm caught up.
Now, I just need to catch up with work.
And all the projects around the house. But having bought my way out of the fence problem, I've knocked down one of the big intractable ones. Or maybe gotten it to stand up, depending on how you look at it.
One step at a time...

Back to Work
Nov. 12th, 2024 10:45 pmToday, it was back to work following Windycon and the Veterans Day holiday. This was delayed by this morning's physical, but actual work was accomplished in the afternoon, so progress is being made.
I'm hoping for more progress tomorrow, because the fellow whose help I need was out sick today, although I ended up bothering him on the phone because I didn't know that. But he understands the parameters of the problem, so if he's feeling better tomorrow, we may get this mess cleaned up.
Whee!

Recovering
Nov. 11th, 2024 09:49 pmThe one thing that is certain is that I will not get enough sleep when I am at a convention. Windycon was no exception.
There were various things that went right and wrong, but overall people seemed to have a good time, which is the goal. I had some great conversations and the open filks were a *lot* of fun.
Tomorrow, I get to go in for a physical. Yay! :)
(That's one way to postpone returning to work, I suppose...)

I was talking with one of my co-workers today about how to fix some particularly intractable problems with the build, when I suddenly had the "Eureka!" moment and realized how to simplify things. Better yet, not just how to simplify things for me and my group, but for all the people in my related group of co-workers on the other side of the wall.
It's nice when something like that happens.
And so far, it's testing out ok.

I spent most of the afternoon today trying to clean up some things in our setup at work. The fellow who made the suggestions tells me that I'm generally on the right track, so that's a good thing.
Meanwhile, back at the "Getting Ready for the Con" category, I have pulled out the electronics and am now starting to make sure that everything is charged and updated, because it is *so* much better if I don't discover that something needs to update over Wi-fi at the con.
Charge!

Maximum Disorganization
Oct. 15th, 2024 10:45 pmI should have gotten more work done today, but I had to put the fence back up where it had blown down, pick up the dog from the doggie spa where she got the bath that she badly needed, go to a meeting at school, go to meetings at work, and try to figure out how to get all of the new software configured correctly.
Oh, and install the (eureka!) 4K Xfinity cable box so I can return the old one and the wrong new one and get them out of my house over the weekend. Plus work on some Windycon stuff.
And do a load of laundry.
Whee!

Keep On Running
Oct. 8th, 2024 06:26 pmThe TV mostly works, although finding the set top box on the TV managed to annoy Gretchen this afternoon. I'll play with things tonight and see if I can find the problem. It may just be a setup thing.
I am playing with the new version of the JDeveloper IDE at work and almost have it working under both Linux and Windows. Close, very close...
And I need to place CD orders for OVFF. *Really* soon...

Here Comes the Weekend
Oct. 4th, 2024 11:14 pmWork's done for the week which means it's time to go to work on the hobbies.
There's a in-person Windycon meeting tomorrow afternoon. And there's Halloween decorating to do.
Also, we have to clear a path for the delivery of the new TV on Monday, assuming that nothing goes wrong with that. We *had* been assigned a 3-7 slot for the delivery according to the website, but now there is no marked delivery time. This could mean a lot of things, but I'm hoping it means the set still shows up. :)

Not Regressing
Oct. 3rd, 2024 09:35 pmWork is going well lately, although a bit disjointed as I jump between projects. But I think I managed to fix a long-standing problem with some of our cookie handling yesterday (with a lot of help from another of our folks who set up the environment and ran the actual tests). We're still testing to make sure there are no cases that defeat the new code, but it's working in all the cases we've managed to recreate so far. This makes me happy.
Home has been disjointed too, but I managed to sneak down into the basement and complete the final fades on a number of tracks. I still need to go spend some time playing with SpectraLayers, but it's been busy and is going to continue being busy for a bit.
Meanwhile, the Mets beat the Brewers tonight to win that Wild Card series, so three out of the four favorites ended up losing. This gives whole new meanings to the word "favorites". (Yes, I know the favorites lose, but they sure seem to be losing a lot in this small sample size of the last two years.)

Mix Checking
Sep. 23rd, 2024 09:58 pmI got to do a bit of mix checking while running out for lunch today. There are a few adjustments to be made, but things are sounding pretty good overall.
Meanwhile, back at work, I sorted several things out with my coworker who is leaving for (most of) a week of vacation tomorrow. When he gets back, I should have answers to questions.
I hope. :)

After yesterday's great burst of offense, the Cubs had much less offense and lost to the A's 4-3, although Ian Happ did manage his second homer of the game off the A's excellent closer in the bottom of the ninth. The solo homer in the ninth would have been much more impressive if the Cubs hadn't been trailing by *two* runs though.
But an old friend and coworker joined me for the game, the conversation was good, and there was a lot of good defense.
Just not as much offense as required.
The Cubs are six games out of the last wild card slot in the NL with 11 games left and needing to pass two teams to get in. This is not an enviable position except as compared to the Cardinals, who are *seven* games out of the last wild card slot and needing to pass three teams, those including the Cubs...

Premonitions
Sep. 16th, 2024 10:12 pmI slept badly last night. It must have been a premonition, because first thing this morning, I got a call from Meineke saying that the tire couldn't be repaired and that with 40K+ miles on this set of tires, I would really need to replace all four. I had been expecting to replace all of the tires soon. I just hadn't expected to replace them today. I said to go ahead.
Unfortunately, they were backed up at the shop. I called while Gretchen and I were at lunch and they said the car would be ready within an hour. That sounded reasonable, so I grabbed stuff we needed at Sam's Club and then had Gretchen drop me off at the shop. Sadly, it was somewhat more than two hours after that initial phone call that the car was finally ready. Ah, well.
As a result of the lousy sleep, I was really short on energy today at work. However, we still made some progress and I expect to make more tomorrow.
