It may amuse you to know that just yesterday I was telling Mark about my early impressions of Washington, DC coming from "Dennis the Menace Goes to Washington." I didn't make it to DC until college, but the images and stories from the comic stayed with me, esp while I was there. Dennis would daydream about actually being in the time/era of whatever historical place he was visiting, talking with Washington, etc.

Hope the rest of your vacation is more fun for you.
