Mission: Improbable (Completed)

I was so ready to give up on the Cardinals this year after they were swept by the Dodgers.

Fortunately, they didn't. Beneficiaries of a great playoff run and a collapse by the Braves, they snuck into the playoffs on the last day of the regular season.

Then they beat the Phillies.

Then they beat the Brewers.

Last night, they beat the Rangers to stay alive in what pundits are saying was one of the greatest games in World Series history.

Tonight, Katie went upstairs and changed into her Cardinals All-Star Game t-shirt and a pair of red pants, as she settled in to watch at least some of game seven with Daddy.

And tonight, the Cardinals won game seven to become the World Champs.

Wow!

Never give up, never surrender. :)

However I have to laugh at North Americans who talk about a "World" anything when what they really mean is "Our country".

As far as I'm aware there isn't a way for a team outside North America to even *enter* the competition.

That's certainly true.

On the other hand, baseball started out here and -- although it's been exported to a number of countries -- is almost certainly still played at the highest level here in the States, as we sop up a lot of foreign players.

There is the country vs. country format series that's played in March now...

On the other hand, it's called the World Series because it was originally sponsored by a newspaper called the New York World, and by the time the paper folded the name was well established.

Pretty darn cool. I know we both wish it had been the Tigers, not the Rangers, in there, but what the hey -- Go Cards! :D

As someone who can remember listening to Cardinals games called by Dizzy Dean, I join in the rejoicing.
