Well, you can't really dispense with a pilot seat if you're going to pull any significant amount of g-forces during the landing. That said, yeah, the story is riddled with logic holes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Headscratchers/TheColdEquations) when one looks at it closely.
