I had a wonderful time at Marcon and may get around to saying more about it later.

But I got home around midnight last night where [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise and Katie were up waiting for me and happy to see me. Julie had already crashed out. And eventually, a good night's sleep was had by all.

I had managed to eat twice at Max & Erma's while in Columbus. Gretchen greatly enjoys their tortilla soup, so I figured it would be fair to take her to lunch at the Max & Erma's on Rand Rd. just a bit north of Lake-Cook Road.

Except the restaurant was closed, so we ended up eating at an Old Country Buffet instead.

The nearest open Max & Erma's is in Mishawaka, Indiana, some 90 miles away.

I'm thinking that's a bit far to go for tortilla soup.

If I remember correctly, Max & Erma's Restaurants (the parent company) chapter-11'ed within the past year and closed many -- but not all -- of their restaurants. The one nearest the Dayton Mall closed, but the one in Springboro, about 4 miles south, did not.

The ones in Illinois closed about two years ago.

My cousin in Columbus was at M&Es on Saturday night and met up with us afterwards.

It is often sad when restaurants close. I feel somewhat less sorry for the loss of a single restaurant within a chain, but still its patrons (if any) are left with fewer dining choices.

Around here, we just heard that yesterday was the last day for a coffee shop/diner restaurant not too far from where we live. This place, Kieth's, is located adjacent or nearly adjacent to MCAS Miramar (F.K.A. NAS Miramar), and has served Navy and Marine personnel and their families for fifty years. But the rent on the property was too much for the current owner. Word is that an IHOP will take its place.

In my hometown a local (plus at one time a couple of location in Las Vegas which may or may not still be there) has closed up most of their locations - including the oldest not too far from where my parent's live - as part of a corporate bankruptcy. The owners claim that the bankruptcy was brought about by a former executive (but not a member of the family who started the restaurants) embezzling funds instead of paying state taxes.

The one on Rand Rd in Deer Park actually closed before the one on Arlington Heights Rd.
