Fatal Stupidity

When I headed out for a late lunch this afternoon, I discovered that Mount Prospect Road was closed at Golf Road. Later, I found out why. Someone drove a semi loaded with chunks of broken concrete around the lowered crossing gates at Northwest Highway and into the path of a Metra train.

Thankfully, it looks like only the truck driver was killed.

Idiot.

In any train + motor vehicle accident, the motor vehicle usually looses. And this could have been worse.

But from personal experience (see http://www.ron-oakes.us/?p=1632, and http://www.ron-oakes.us/?p=1635 - plus two more short posts in between), I can tell you that even without getting hurt, being a passenger in a fatal train + ? accident isn't that much fun.

Apparently about 80 people were sent to the hospital. The driver had a history that included at least one DUI, driving the wrong way down a one-way street, and failure to obey traffic signals.

It's good to see that sometimes, when stupidity takes its fatal toll, it's actually the stupid that die. It's too often the innocent that die when someone else does something stupid.
It's too bad that in the U.S. this is about the only way to take a really dangerous driver off the road. It's amazing that any trucking company was willing to let him drive for them.

You wanna see something bad, here's a woman with 69 red light camera tickets, $10,000 in fines (they can't send cops to arrest her because camera violations are civil infractions), has blown red lights at nearly 80 MPH in a 30 MPH zone, and has come close to pedestrians. She's driving on a suspended license, yet apparently they can't even get her off the road.
