Before going to bed, I generally either read or tell Katie a story. Of late when I read her a story, she takes the book into bed with her.

And then she tells me to leave the door to her room open wider so that she's got enough light from the hall to read it. Or at least look at the pictures and repeat the words that she's memorized. :)

Our Simon is a midnight reader too. I want him to get his sleep, yet both Wesley and I remember the feeling of just not being able to put the book down -- especially when you SHOULD be sleeping. :-) So, our rebukes don't have any teeth in them. (It's hard to sound suitably repressive when you're trying not to grin.)

I cultivated a fish tank as a child so I could have the tank light on at night as a reading lamp.

I constantly am fishing books out of the covers of my kids' beds, too.

It makes me Geek Mom proud.

In my youth, after I stopped sleeping with the light on, I had a nightlight, which was wonderfully useful for reading with a book thrust out sideways from the edge of the bed.

Then, later, I used the 8 digit red LED display of a pocket calculator, set to all 8s, negated, and overflowed, with a 1 in the memory for instant recall in case of parent.

The biggest issue, while discovering the Dortmunder stories by Donald Westlake, was stifling the laughter.

But today, there are so many light emitting devices around, I've been wondering if there is any challenge to reading under the covers for children?
