It turns out that the "magic smoke" that I smelled earlier this afternoon may not have been magic smoke after all. I have an intake fan in the window that sucks air in when the weather is good to keep the room cool with all of the computers I have running in here.

Apparently, someone was spraying our back yard this afternoon with some chemical or other. And the intake fan pulled it right into the office while I was gone...

So it seems there are no casualties. :)

Would switching to an exhaust fan work to keep it at the same temperature as the house and avoid bringing in surprises? My experience has been blowing air out works better than in.

The problem is that the upstairs tends to overheat, so pulling in more air from the hall isn't as helpful as bringing in cooler air directly from outside into my office, which is usually the hottest room up here due to the computers.
