I've almost finished rearranging all of the files that I need to move around in our projects so that I can actually do the project that I set out to do. The compile is almost clean and I think all that I need to do is revert a file that inadvertently got the wrong contents in it and make a few changes to fix it up.

Then I can finish this when I get back from OVFF.

Update: It's 2 AM. Remote ClearCase is checking out the 1000+ files that I have hijacked. It's two percent complete. Maybe it'll finish by morning and I can start the check in.

Maybe.

When I was using ClearCase, the performance wasn't great even on an industrial-strength LAN, I wound up doing image ("snapshot"?) checkouts every release so I could have a tree I could search quickly. I don't suppose shapshots would go any faster than the live checkouts? Or since just the checkout operation itself is taking so long, vs. setting a config spec, maybe you could check out to a machine on the LAN, then zip/FTP the files over? Another option, if it's latency/WAN that is giving you troubles, could be to check out/in several different subtrees simultaneously?

If it's license overhead that takes a lot of your time, maybe see if splitting off one license and putting that on a license server in your place would help? Surely time to delivery would be worth money even if your time weren't, and you can't always sleep through a checkout...

Does your hijacking those files mean that no one else can do any work? Was it any better when you were all in the same location? My guess would be yes, just because of LAN speeds. Do you suppose they'll ever admit that work at home was a bad idea?
