[livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise, looking at the fact that I'm going to be working at home shortly, asked me about setting up another computer somewhere in the house where she could get to the Internet and Katie could play with Baby Type. I considered the various hulks of ancient hardware in the house and decided to buy something new and relatively cheap. So after a trip to Fry's (where I returned the RAM that didn't work in the computer at work) and the WindyCon meeting tonight, I'm sitting in the bedroom where Gretchen is trying to sleep -- with a knee that decided to act up in bad ways shortly after I left the house -- and configuring the new machine.

Anti-virus software is loaded, Google Chrome is loaded, Windows Update has been run, printer drivers have been installed, and now I just need to get PC-Pine running so Gretchen can pick up her e-mail.

Oh. And Baby Type.

So far, so good.

Update: Yeah, except for one little detail. This box came preloaded with 64-bit Vista. Baby Type is a 16-bit application. I have a workaround in mind for this, but not one I can finish executing tonight. *sigh*

Do you mean a 32-bit application? I didn't think Baby Type was THAT old!

Have you guys tried out Reader Rabbit yet? They have it at the Kohl Children's Museum (and the Indian Trails Public Library). Alex loves it and started getting the hang of it at about Katie's age. There's games to play and it only requires the child to move the mouse and hover over areas of the screen for it to interact (or press a random key on the keyboard). Now that he has it figured out, we've expanded to a Mickey Mouse and Tigger and Pooh game (labeled for Toddler) that use the same mechanics.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?
