So I've ordered a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and floppy drive (just in case) to use to revive the studio computer. The real PITB will come when I try to repair Windows on top of the new motherboard. Oh, joy.

But I really need to get this beast running again.

Which board and cpu did you go with?

ASUS P5Q3 with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500. I feel like a derf for buying another ASUS board after the last one seems to have died in such interesting fashion, but looking at the reviews, it seems that finding a solid motherboard with the features I want can be more challenging that I'd hoped.

How long did it take the last one to die? Don't they all die eventually?

Almost exactly two years. Not nearly long enough.
