And today, I got an LJ message from a fellow who has mistaken me for the fellow by the same name who produces video games. I've explained that he's gotten the wrong person. :)

It's not the first time this has happened to me -- the Marcon program book once had the same confusion. I was wondering why this young man came up to me asking me to say such and such a line. Apparently, it's from one of the video games.

Right, you're the Bill Roper who was Dean at UNC School of Public Health and was tapped by President George W. Bush to serve on the President's Commission on White House Fellowships in 2002.

My favorite was when Sutton's mother asked my father if he was the "Bob Laurent" behind Wail Songs.

My name is pretty common, so my personal home page is called "The NAME Identity Test: Is this the NAME you are looking for?" That gives me an excuse to list my interests, etc., under defining characteristics. At the end I have:

I am not (but I have been confused with):

* Alan SURNAME. Alan is my middle name, not my first. There is an Alan SURNAME who lives in Framingham, as I did for twenty years but no longer do, and is married to a librarian, as I have been for even longer.
* a Webmaster, sysop, listserv administrator, or ISP provider of any kind
* a writer of program notes for the Boston Symphony Orchestra or an employee of WCRB radio, Waltham** (Massachusetts)
* a physician in Brookline, a Cablevision employee in Natick**, or a MediaOne or Channel 13 employee in Needham** (all in Massachusetts)
* the media relations director for ABC Sports**
* a former member of the Automation Group at United Airlines' Maintenance Operations Center (hi, wotten Wayne!)
* "the NAME who went to P.S. 220 in Forest Hills (alright, alright, Flushing), New York"
* an alumnus of the Cherry Lawn School in Darien, Connecticut, or of any grade school in Canada
* an ex-Torontonian now living in Las Vegas
* "the NAME who grew up on the south side of Chicago"
* the son of a Mystic, Connecticut, coffee shop owner
* born or adopted in California
* adopted anywhere else, either

** although it's odd how many of these are in broadcasting [as my father was]

There is another Gary Ehrlich in my county who at one point was the coordinator of a Jewish singles bike group. I got the occasional phone call for him. These were particularly funny after [livejournal.com profile] the_sheryl moved in with me. I think I may have even gotten at least one after we were engaged!
