Report From Gas War Alley

The cheapest gas in the area has lately been at the Speedway on Touhy between Wolf and Lee. This morning, regular unleaded was $3.989. This afternoon, it was down to $3.969.

That's still a lot more than the $3.739 I paid near Milwaukee last night after watching the Cubs beat the Brewers. But it's a good bit less that the $4.169 I paid at that Speedway late last week.

We were able to fill up the van (finally running again after almost 5 months on the blocks) this evening at Sam's Club for $3.649. Ten or twelve days ago we were at $4.249 at the same stations. That's a 60-cent shift. Could it be that people's habits have finally changed enough to affect the demand side of the equation a bit?

The highest I paid was $4.299. I paid $3.999 the other day. Two of the stations I pass on the way to and from work went down 3 cents during the day. NPR's reporting that crude oil closed at $121 yesterday.

It's in the $3.8x range here. It was $3.85 at the local gas station, and I have a 5 cent off per gallon coupon from the grocery store. :)

The trend continues down; we had been pinned against $3.99 here in northern Mississippi, with higher grades getting a larger differential than the customary 10 cents to make up for it, but today, the cheapest here in town is $3.77.

Which is good, as I have to make a cargo run to Hattiesburg this week.

Columbus, Ohio -- I ride the bus downtown daily and the lowest price I saw this morning was $3.57 at the GetGo just north of Arcadia and High Street.

I hear demand has dropped and that's what's driving the prices down.

But it won't stay down if everybody thinks it's okay to drive again "because gas is cheaper now".
