And so I said to myself, I'm getting a Bluetooth headset for my new cellphone and, if I get one that's stereo-capable, I can use the MP3 player capabilities of the phone when I'm flying from place to place, like to GAFilk and the British filkcon. So I did.

Except that you can't run a Bluetooth device while in flight. Oops. And the only other way to use the MP3 player on the phone is in speakerphone mode which would be just a wee bit annoying to the other passengers.

So I'm thinking about buying an MP3 player that suitable for airplane use. I don't need fancy DRM, as I just intend to use it with files that I rip myself from CDs I already own.

What's a good choice?

I've been very happy with my sansa. I originally had the 2g but it wasn't near big enough so I moved up to the 8g. darkwing830 and one of my co-workers both have ipods and both have complained about the inability to copy music from their ipods onto their computers, it only works one way. No prob with the sansa, the computer treats it just like another drive.

I'll second the Sansa. Sue and I have the Sansa 40 (1 gig) and a 2 gig SD card slipped in the side. It suits for the few times I want a player.

I works fine in my Linux computers.

I have a 4gig Zen that cost me near nothing from Target, and I've been mostly happy with it. Unlike the previous piece of crap I had, it doesn't just freak out and lose all of the songs that it has.

But that's not a ringing endorsement, really. Good sound, though.

But here's a question back - for those MP3s which you are not ripping yourself, where do you download/purchase from (personal preference for this, in other words).

I got me one of these Pogo (http://www.pogoelectronics.com/radioyourway.html) units. It uses SD cards, so you can have different libraries on different disks, the internal memory is of little consequence. It is all solid state. And it records.

I have a 30 gig Ipod and I love it. I rip all of my music myself, and ignore Itunes formats for just your basic 192 kbs MP3s. Itunes is easy to use, and easy to sort your music with.

As it happens, I was in Radio Shack yesterday shopping for an MP3 player. I'd ruled out iPods because they have non-replaceable (or at least non-user-replaceable) batteries. If something is going to be expensive, it should last for years, and iPods have built-in obsolescence.

First I looked at a SanDisk player, a 2G model for $40 or $50 IIRC. It's usable only with Windows, so that was a deal-breaker for me.

What I wound up with was a 1G MyMusix PD-6070. It weighs about an ounce. It connects to a USB port, charges off it, and looks to the computer like a disk drive. The controls are a bit confusing and you need the manual, but that's probably inevitable for something that small. It has a decent text display. It cost $39.99.

I've had it less than 24 hours, but so far it looks like a good purchase.

We've been very happy with the Creative Zen line of MP3 players.
