Things I Will Miss
Jul. 3rd, 2007 11:42 amWhen we get around to moving our office, I will miss the short stretch of Harms Road that passed through the Forest Preserve with trees arching above the two-lane road. It's very peaceful there, even with traffic.

Date: 2007-07-04 05:23 am (UTC)One winter, we had an especially heavy snowfall on a Friday.
I had one of those I-can't-believe-I-agreed-to-this 0darkhundred
hour meetings the folling Saturday, and was stood up!
On the way home, I passed through that area, and decided to just
spend some time tromping the woods there. The snow was thick,
soft, pure and dampened all sounds -- except for a single,
early-rising cross-country skier, whose "shwoosh-shwish"
added the perfect descant to the branch of the Chicago River
that flows through the forest preserve. I can't count the
number of greys and whites and blacks that layered to make a
scene more of texture than color, but it was probably the most
beautiful landscape I had seen before -- or since.
Ever since, I've preferred winterscapes to summerscapes.
And yes, it calmed me down quite nicely, thank you. Even now, when
I need moments of calm, I think back to the sight/sound/smell of
that perfect morning.
