No Good News

daisy_knotwise let Bilbo out of the bathroom this morning and went and sat on the couch with him purring on one knee and Katie sitting on the other. A little before ten, I put him in the cat carrier and took him to see the vet.

The nurse weighed him. Bilbo was down to four-and-a-half pounds, pretty much skin and bones. The vet looked at the growth in his ear and gave him a shot of a sedative so that he'd relax and sleep, since he clearly wasn't happy being at the vet.

We talked briefly. There really wasn't anything they could do to fix his problems. And it was time for him to go.

We'll get his ashes back later and sprinkle them under the maple tree with his sister, Shvaughn.

Louie and I had noticed that your beloved senior kitty was quite old and frail. I am very glad you had him for as long as you did, and glad you can acknowledge "It was time for him to go." And it does sound like an easy passing, on the whole. Perhaps when the time is right, you can get an equally wonderful kitty (the younger "kitten" type) and raise him/her/it with just as much love. And yes, you're supposed to love your pets, or else why have them? *Hugs* all around.

I have a dog who's almost 13. She seems to be in good health, but the day is nearing when I'll have to do this, to. And I've done it in the past. It's never easy, even when we know it's for the best.

The hardest gift

It's so hard to let them go, but they don't understand why they are feeling so horrible, or why their owners don't want to snuggle with their stinky selves any more. Life just becomes confusing and difficult.

When we had to let go of our dogs, Binky (17) and later Socrates (15), it was very hard, but in both cases, the best choices for both the dogs and for us. The vets who had cared for Bink even called in a couple of the people who had loved him and played with him over the years, to be there when he left. They even made a donation in our dog's behalf for an Animal Shelter.

I'm so sorry that you've lost your kitty. I hope that another animal comes to your loving home when you're ready.

It's been about 9 months since I lost Puma (under similar circumstances). I had thought that I had been adjusting fairly well, but your post brought back a lot of those memories - hard.

Nonetheless, it was the RIGHT thing to do and even the KIND thing to do.

Right now painful thoughts have undoubtedly risen like the tide, covering the happy memories for the time being. But that unhappy tide will fall again. The happy memories will be uncovered, unharmed by their brief submersion. They are eternal with you.
