Today was the day for counting.

  • [livejournal.com profile] catalana uses a great many words in her songs. It turns out that there are so many words that they won't fit in an eight panel insert at any size larger than five point type. So we will not be putting the lyrics in the insert, but will instead post words and chords on the website.

  • This is a good excuse for getting some content up at dodeka.com, just as soon as I sort out the web hosting.

  • Using both my fingers and Katie's, I determined that if everything went really well in the duplication process, we could still have Hello, Stranger out for FilkOntario. Mind you, that hardly ever happens.

  • I have four minor bits of recording that I should do for my album today. If I finish those and spend the next few evenings in the studio, I should be able to finish the mix before my surgery.

  • Everyone is under too much stress right now. Count on it.

As a result, I have consulted, conferred, and hobnobbed with my fellow wizards and have determined that we will release both albums at Marcon.

    Really.

If you need help with the website, now is the time to hit me up for that. The Project... of DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM is done, and I've got the free cycles now, theoretically.

1 & 1 is who I've got kuczwara.com with, and spacetimeimprov.com with (neither have anything right now, which must be rectified soon).

The question is are you going to be hosting audio clips for download? That might eat into your download allotment. Video clips, podcasts, etc (from concerts? I dunno) are another concern. Also, the $4.99 plan doesn't seem to have a database tied to it, so you'll have a harder time if you want to put your catalog up on the web at some point. It CAN be done with a flat file and PHP, but do you want to?

Also, these are the linux hosting packages. Did you want that or the MS package?

    So many questions...

IMO, there are no advantages and a ton of disadvantages to getting an MS package.

But then I'm a big believer in open standards and none of the "must run on Windows" garbage is W3C compliant.

Do the Linux hosting. Use PHP and mySQL and life will be good.

I'm certain that they will let you upgrade, but yeah, better safe than sorry. Actually, more important is what they will DO if you go over your allotment, without upgrading. If, say, you go a gig or two over your download rate for the month, do they automatically upgrade you? Or do they charge you some ridiculous amount, like a cell phone company would? Do they notifiy you if you are going over? Or do you need to keep track of that yourself?

As for the difference between MS and Linux - eh. Your choice. You're not administering the machine, so it won't really matter to you too much. So as far as I'm concerned, it's just about what you want it coded in on the back end - ASP or PHP. The front end stuff isn't going to care. So, if you do upgrade to having a database on the back end, do you want SQL Server, or mySQL? I'm good with either, so that decision is up to you, really. I know you're more of an MS guy, which is why I bring it to your attention. And, if I remember correctly, the pricing structure is the same for the comperable MS/Linux accounts. Something else to consider is this - do you already have your stock, album information, etc, already in a database? Is it Access or MSSQL? If so, then you should go with the MS account because if you decide to upgrade and throw all of that (or some subset of that) on to the webserver, it will be trival, I believe, to create the database from your backup, instead of creating the mySQL database with your MS database stuff. I don't know, honestly - I've not done an MS to mySQL conversion - it may be just as easy.

But I'd lay money on "not".
