Aside from the fact that Diet Pepsi is much better (IMO), there's the danger that someone might have booby-trapped it with Mentos.

I expect that the Boston police will be right on this one...

I'm waiting for the first news story about someone who does this to figure out who keeps stealing their coke out of the fridge. :)

Another reason for me to quit drinking diet soda. :)

All the Boston area papers are running headlines with variants on "No one's laughing." They haven't looked at the Internet very much, I guess.

Does this particular chemical reaction work only with diet soft drinks?

It works with any carbonated soft drink, but supposedly it works best with Diet Coke.

When done for fun rather than wish malicious intent, using diet soda makes a less nasty mess than sugared soda.

What I want to know is how well carbonated alcoholic bevereages perform in comparison. Champagne is so violently carbonated that it fountains without help; one wonders what would happen if you could get a Mentos into the bottle. (First champagne cork on the moon?)
