[livejournal.com profile] jeff_duntemann and Carol dropped by again this evening to bring some supplies for tomorrow's christening, the gift of a Diaper Genie (which seems like a really good idea!), and to spend some more time bonding with their new niece. I have on my digital camera a wonderful picture of Jeff with Katie happily sleeping on his lap. She was an incredibly warm baby which is good, given that our house is frequently a bit cool.

It was only when Jeff handed her off that he discovered that she was an incredibly wet baby with a leaky diaper. Oops! [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise attributed this to too much time between changes, so she changed her, changed her sleeper, and Jeff headed off to the bathroom to mop up as best he could.

After they left, Gretchen and I returned to decorating the Christmas tree. I was holding Katie while Gretchen put the unbreakable ornaments on the low branches when suddenly I felt something wet on my knee. Leaky diaper again! In fact, pretty much completely useless diaper, because this was obviously the direct result of the current action.

Last weekend, I'd gone to Sam's Club to pick up a big package of diapers at Gretchen's command. We'd been using Huggies, but Sam's didn't have Huggies in the right size, only Pampers. So I got about 200 of those. Which apparently leak. Oh, boy. Or girl. Or something like that.

We had planned to go to Culver's for dessert, so after I changed my pants and underwear and Gretchen changed Katie, we headed out with plans to stop at the Jewel and grab more Huggies, because Katie's been sleeping with us and I'm fond of a dry bed. But as we headed back to the car after custard, Gretchen said, "Wait! Those weren't the Pampers. The diapers that leaked were the Wal-Mart house brand that I had downstairs."

"Both times?"

"Yup."

"Let's not use those any more, ok?"

At least I don't have nearly 200 likely leaky diapers to deal with.

Persis, did you ever even receive the $45 check I sent back in August for Interfilk? It hasn't cleared at the bank, as-of the November statement.

FYI- the Sam's Club brand, Member's Mark, is produced by Huggies (or at least it was a couple years ago when I purchased a defective package and called the manufacturer's number to let them know). Same product, same quality, different pictures. Save your $$ and get Member's Mark and you'll get an equally good quality product at a better price. The Sam's house brand (I forget the name) sucks rocks.

The leaks might be bacause the diapers are a little bit too big. Compare them with the Huggies, they might be ok once she has grown a bit more.

Some diapers just aren't shaped properly to some babies. We tried a bunch of brands before settling on Huggies. Luvs were definitely the worst, but Mary & David used Luvs alot with Eddie. It really just depends on the kid :)

We've also discovered that Luvs just aren't right for Ish. Back to Huggies for us. (what do I know diapers? I picked pretty much at random. That's what people get for sending me to buy diapers. :)

Luvs also did not work for any of our kids. They just did not fit right. It totally depends on the kid. I have friends that swear by Luvs.

Gosh, sounds like you have a baby in the house :-)

It's always amazing to me just how much DIFFERENT babies and the things they wear can be from one another. The brands that one parent swears by are the ones the next parent hates. At least you have a general sense of what to get now!

Costco carries the bulk quantities of Huggies. That's what we use.

That'll learn you to buy the Wal-Mart brand!!!!

In period fiber arts, we use urine for fulling new cloth and for mordanting dyes. Too bad she's a girl; it's harder to catch! ;-)

I've been lucky. My niece threw up on me once, but neither she nor my nephew ever wet me.

I'm amazed at the discussion

We used a diaper service (cloth) for the first 3 months and had no problems like this. You'd think we'd have had problems afterwards, but I don't recall any.

When Claire was little her favorite thing was to spit up, maybe gulp up, formula on people. We had those Playtex bottles with the plastic liners that were supposed to be good for keeping the air out of baby's tummy... but her food still didn't seem to settle well. Turned out to be "Operator Error" according to the ladies in Gary's Bible study group. At the beginning, when you fill less than 8 oz, of course there is still air left in the 8 oz plastic liner... I wondered how it was not going to end up in Claire's stomach, but I was a trusting soul. Gary discussed our dilemma in his Bible study. The ladies asked Gary if we were squeezing all the air out of the pouch ... and the light bulb went on... oh, you're supposed to reach your hand up inside the bottom of the bottle and squeeze the bag.... I get it ... we parents take a little training. So a happy tummy followed for Claire and happy garments for Mom & Dad.

God bless you all today as you christen Kathleen Elizabeth. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Love,
Judy

Yea I had problems with the Walmart house brand too especially when the babies were little. Once they had a little more meat on them the fit a lot better. I also found that for US the best fitting diapers were Pampers Swaddlers until about 15 lbs then the Pampers Cruisers after that. When we can afford the Cruisers we get them, but most of the time we buy the Giant Eagle brand of diaper which is actually very effective. Now, both of my babies are 24 lbs and 34 lbs and have more bum to fill the diaper than Katie does, but the generics work ok for us.
