When we bought our house eight years ago, we had paid the builder extra to get elongated toilets instead of round toilets. (It's a big guy thing.) During the walkthrough before closing, Gretchen noticed that they'd put the round toilets in anyway. "Oops. We'll take care of that." And they did. In the worst possible way, as it turned out.

One of the upstairs toilets soon developed a leak. We fixed it. The other upstairs toilet developed a leak. We fixed it.

A wise man would have inspected the downstairs toilet some seven years ago.

So when we noticed the toilet was seriously leaking and wobbling back and forth when we sat on it, we decided to pull the bowl and take a look (with help from our friend Sam).

It's been leaking into the floor for a long time. The floor is going to have to be rebuilt, because the floorboard is completely rotten.

*sigh*

One upping...

I know someone that found after 7 years that the downstairs toilet wasn't connected to ANYTHING.

The house inspector when they bought the house, missed it. Their house inspector, on selling the house, came out from under the house gagging.

They had sometimes noticed a smell, but thought it was the dog.

Oh my goodness. I suppose it is too late to try a warranty?
Our own upstairs toilet started leaking last year and [livejournal.com profile] h_punkt fixed up a new one. Which then promptly started leaking at precisely the same place.

I have no idea of the different types of toilets or why it's a big guy thing... but *hug* and sympathies at the unpleasant discovery of serious DIY-need. I hope you'll get it sorted without any more unpleasant discoveries in the process!

Ugh, ugh, ugh. Having dealt with minor plumbing issues over the weekend, oh, do I sympathize!

My downstairs bathroom had a rotted out floor too. I pulled the wood out in handfulls. Happily, it really isn't that bad of a job. I think it cost me under two hundred to have a guy do it, including materials.
