Wicked

I've been squashing bugs all day at work, so I'm looking forward to taking a night off from recording as daisy_knotwise, catalana, Sam, Bonnie, Jerry, and I head down to the Loop to see our Chicago production of Wicked. Unfortunately, we didn't know that decadent_dave would be in town when we got the tickets or we would have grabbed one for him too, but he assures us that he's got plenty to read and will be fine for the evening.

I haven't read the book that the musical is based on, but I know bits and pieces of the plotline from many reviews. We'll see how it is.

And maybe I can steal enough magic from it to get my tapes to show up in the mail. The Post Office tells Gretchen that we're still within the window for delivery of first class mail from Indianapolis, leading me to wonder what the meaning of "first class" is, since someone could have walked here with the tapes by this time.

I hope you enjoy Wicked as much as I did - *am* jealous, I would love to see it again someday. We got incredibly lucky and Ben Vreen came through and was playing the wizard the night we went to see it. And honestly reading and enjoying the book might just make the musical confusing.

I enjoyed the book when I read it, and the musical when I saw it, but the stories are very different, in both tone and plot.

That's ok. I'm trusting that they're just being "Awful" and not "Terrible", so that the tapes will actually show up. :)

Given the amount of work that we've been doing on catalana's album these two weeks, it would have been really difficult to find time to work on them in any case. So no harm, no foul.

Have you noticed this recording after a full day of work thing is hard work? :)

I'll second this and Sandy will probably third this. Wicked the Musical truly is an "inspired by the book" sort of production and not a true adaptation. I read the book long before seeing the musical and was a little upset by what was missing, but I still enjoyed it. Sandy read the book after seeing the musical and I believe commented that she was glad she saw the show first.

Wicked is a great book, and the songs from the musical are wonderful. The kids that do musical theatre numbers at the local music festival do several of them frequently, especially the "loathing" duet and "popular". I didn't care for the look of the show in the few pictures I saw, but the music is wonderful.

O, yes indeedy. In fact, I used a vacation day so I could get a proper start -- and between getting properly set up, tested, tuned, etc., working out the most efficient way to separate guitar and vocal tracks thoroughly (while still keeping the correct speech-rhythm nuances in the guitar phrasing so it would sync naturally), and immersing in the recording process till I could get basic guitar and vocal tracks laid down that I liked well enough as foundations . . . and then shutting-down-and-putting-away to make room for band practice . . . well, at the end of the day I had a master tuning track, two short song cores, and two longer song cores. They're good, but ye godz. The rest of the recording time will probably be catch-as-catch-can, one instrumental or vocal track at a time. But at least now I know how to get 'em done efficiently. Just another part of the overall learning curve.
