Our favorite local Mexican restaurant, Taqueria Fiesta, is closing next Saturday. Apparently, the owner of the building has sold it out from under them so they can build another bank on the site. That'll be the eighth one on Elmhurst Road between Oakton and Golf.

Frankly, I found the place much more useful as a Mexican restaurant.

About two years ago, they closed a Big Boy at Washtenaw and Huron Parkway, right in the Arborland shopping district, because Fifth-Third Bank simply had to have a branch there. Turkeys had signs up, "Coming Soon -- The New Home Of 5/3 Bank!" as if people cared.

For some reason, the current restaurant fad in Shampoo-Banana is Mexican, and we've got a bunch more of them than there can possibly be business for. But even so, I don't think any of them actually need to be turned into banks.

Is this the one you took me to? With the cheese/sausage thing?

Sadly, yes.
I'm bereft.
Salud, the owner, is a customer of the bank and a very nice lady that has worked VERY hard for the last 15 years with that restaurant.
Damn Shame.

Oh, THAT'S how you parse it

When I read the title I originally thought it was "news about bad Mexican food", rather than "bad news about Mexican food".

Not an unprecedented occurrence around here.

About 2 years ago, the long time home of a weekly fanish gathering in Palatine was sold (the quote of the owner was for enough money to fill the place) and torn down to make room for yet another bank.

That stretch of Rand Road in Palatine now has about 10 banks, which is at least 8 banks more than it needs.

In Oxford, MS (I live in Water Valley; we have 3 banks, but the main form of commerce involves companies moving from one storefront to another, with no changes except of address), banks are the major growth industry, but fortunately, the rural edge is far closer to the square, so nothing gets REPLACED by banks, they just build yet another bank. Only one or two of the 6 I can think of bothered with what I'd call a building, though. One is brick, with two stories, and another has a large analog clock. The others build miniature strip malls, suitable to be converted to cell phone stores later, if need be.

None as interesting as the traditional grecian temple of finance, scaled down to the size of a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise I found in Naperville, though; someday, I have to go back and take a picture: a little one story building, tricked out with columns and a full dome!
