Keeping In Step

My feet have always been pretty flat. When I started working as a teaching assistant in college, I went out and bought a pair of walking shoes after the first lab, because the lack of arch support in the shoes I had was killing me.
Much later, Dr. Bob suggested that I switch to New Balance shoes, as they had excellent arch support. This worked for a long time, especially after he gave me a prescription for custom orthotics. I need a new set of orthotics every year, because I tend to flatten them, but I get a new pair of shoes at the same time and the support has always been excellent.
Until this year. The new shoes don't seem to have the arch support that the old ones did, although they are nominally the same shoes. This seems to be something of a trend at New Balance and not a good one.
I was complaining about this and Gretchen suggested that I try some shoes from the brand that she just started wearing, Orthofeet. I found something suitable and placed the order. The shoes arrived a couple of days ago and I had the chance to start wearing them today.
The shoes come with an added arch support that you can slip in under the insole if you need it. I just inserted it immediately. The shoes feel pretty good and there are a few more adjustments that I can make and may try as I wear them for a bit. They are definitely lighter weight than the New Balance shoes, which doesn't hurt any either.
We'll see how they wear.
