I was checking through the mail -- Gretchen receives it and I end up looking at what's come in somewhat later -- and discovered that we had gotten our triennial reassessment notices. When I opened it up, I discovered that the value of our property has supposedly gone up by 50%.

Looking at what homes have and are selling for in this area, I find that *extremely* unlikely.

Great. Now I need a lawyer...

Property reassessments often take big jumps. As long as everyone's assessments went up correspondingly and the tax rate was adjusted to match, you're OK. But I must admit I've never heard of a jump as big as 50% in 3 years.

Given that the assessment on a house in my neighborhood that sold in March of this year is more than 20% higher than the sale price (and I found two other recent sales with a similar level of over-assessment), I would say that the assessor is drinking his own Kool-Aid.
