Via Instapundit: Teresa Nielsen Hayden suffers from narcolepsy. The FDA has just banned the only drug that she's found that is effective in treating the condition. Needless to say, this is going to be a bad thing.

It is good when consumer protection watchdog types force the makers of any sort of product to warn the consumer of possible dangers, shortcomings, and side effects in the product. It is very bad when consumer protection watchdog types decide they are wiser than we are and must protect us from ourselves by getting products off the market.

In the case of drugs, all drugs that actually have benefits also have side effects. Sometimes the side effects are quite severe, but even so, sometimes the benefits are worth risking the side effects. Doctors need to decide on a case by case basis.

Naderites probably have done some good over the years, but my gut reaction is that I'd like the lot of them to shut up and go away.
