I went to install the Cubase SX3 upgrade that I bought last year direct from Steinberg.

Unfortunately, it was on DVD and I hadn't yet installed the DVD-RW drive that I had bought. So I pulled the computer apart and installed the new drive. Then I could finally install the software.

The license key in the sealed package that I got from Steinberg isn't recognized by the license server.

No wonder copy protection has such a bad name.

I'm with you. We had to upgrade *needlessly* to a new OSX compatible copy of Cubase because the server stopped recognising our old, PERFECTLY LEGAL copy of VST. We didn't want a new copy, we wanted to use the old copy that did everything we wanted, that we knew how to use, and that we paid £500 for, DAMMIT!!!

Manage to get anything out of that helpline and you're doing better than I ever did. Grrrrrrrr!

Actually, I got a very nice fellow on the e-mail who had obviously seen the problem before. It turns out that the R and A in the font are really hard to tell apart. Everything's updated now, so I just need to see if it actually works. :)

I'm sorry that you got burned on the VST upgrade.

I take it you've already contacted them to complain.... Maybe the numbers (sounds stupid, but maybe) expire after a certain amount of time?

No, just an unreadable font. But it's fixed now.

I had worried about them expiring unused licenses, since I'd read they'd had a problem with the license system getting cracked, but that wasn't the issue here.

There have been several programs where I had a nice legal copy, but prefered to use a cracked version instead because of the copy protection.
