Draft Fitzgerald

In his column in today's Chicago Tribune, Dennis Byrne suggests that the best thing that could happen to Illinois politics would be to draft Sen. Peter Fitzgerald and re-elect him to the office that he currently holds. Since Fitzgerald is the only Illinois politician that I actually like -- he may sometimes be perceived as a crank, but even when I don't agree with him, I find he's my kind of crank -- this sounds like a pretty fine idea to me.

In other news, Gretchen and I watched the extended edition of "The Two Towers" last night and are off to see "Return of the King" tonight.

Whatever I think of Fitzgerald, and I do think he's done a reasonably good job, I'll say that anything Dennis Byrne supports, I tend to oppose. If he and John Kass ever take opposite sides of an issue, it will be very difficult to decide which one I disagree with more. :)

One of the best things about Fitzgerald (although you might disagree) is that fact that he does not walk in lockstep with the dictates of the Senate Majority leadership.

Nope, I 100% agree with that last comment. We'd be better off if more Senators and Congressmen of both parties voted their conscience instead of the party line or whichever would deliver more pork to their states or districts.
