And now I've managed to successfully configure the mixer so that I can monitor a mixdown in Cubase using the mixer as a control surface and I've rendered a song from the Cubase mixer into a WAV file that can be further processed. Mind you, I didn't do anything fancy like introduce effects, because the effects rack in Cubase Essentials is a bit limited compared to what I'm used to, but there's a complete song that was recorded from the mixer to Cubase, mixed in Cubase, and saved.

I still need to reopen lanes to play with them, but other than that, I'm ready to go, I think.
