I'm living in the future. I have been for a while now.

It was one thing in Gulf War I, when CNN was broadcasting live images from Baghdad. But then there was Gulf War II, where we saw live video footage being beamed back from embedded reporters as the units they were attached to found tanks and complexes that had been eerily abandoned by Saddam's Republican Guard.

And today I'm watching a live webcam feed of fires in New Orleans on my computer here at work, broadcast by [livejournal.com profile] interdictor as he tries to keep his little corner of civilization alive during what [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise has aptly described as "the worst U.S. natural disaster of the television age".

I'm living in the future. I just wish it didn't look quite so much like the past.

I wish I cold have said it that way. It was nice to see the trucks in a convoy driving though the town. Hopefully towards the convemtion center.

The lead part of that convoy, dozens of loaded MANN Trucks and troops are at the convention center, boots on the ground. Command center being set up. It LOOKS like help has arrived.. finally

The thing I haven't sen any actual reporting on is this... theoretically those trucks and helicopters are coming in fully loaded with supplies and what not. Are they leaving fully loaded with passengers? Or are we running into some sort of DOT/OSHA crap that says those vehicles aren't rated for transporting passengers. It would seem for every truck that goes in another 20 people could go out. Every little bit would help.
