The problem is that we're in a synchronized release schedule with several other products, so that really isn't an option. I did, however, find a spot in the old code where a lock was conspicuously missing, so I patched it up. We're also likely to temporarily dial back the multithreading a bit to reduce the likelihood of collisions.
And then we'll get the locking rewrite tested and released in a patch, because it really does need to be tested after the merge.
