In this case, the field was our library at home. We recorded four tracks simultaneously to Cubase from the new mixer, then listened to them on the mixer. The technology was a wonderful success.

The personnel needed a little work. :) Katie kept moving her mic around, [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise had a bad reaction to dinner, and Julie decided to start a music box playing in the middle of one take. I forgot to plug the guitar in for one take, rendering it pretty much useless.

But the files were beamed up to the NAS, sucked down to the computer in the basement, imported into Cubase there, and have now been mixed.

It was only about 1:34 worth of music, but it worked.

(And now I'm going to reboot the machine upstairs and see if it still sees the mixer...)

Glad to hear the new road gear worked out. How did the reboot go?

Sounds like you need to teach Katie how to properly use a mic.

But having a working field recording setup is great. I am always a bit leery when buying filk recordings (especially older ones) having heard a few recordings that were clearly made with a mic (or pair) located somewhere in the audience that had lousy fidelity, and in some cases were just plain hard to hear the performance. So, even without being much of a sound engineer or recording tech(*), I can appreciate this kind of setup.

(*)Twice, I recorded services at Wheaton Bible Church when they were still in downtown Wheaton. In both cases, I was mixing live, monitoring the recording mix through headphones while also wearing the ClearCom headphone to hear requests from the stage manager (I also had control of the stage and in-ear monitors) and sitting in the house hearing at least the lower tones from the house system.

When we were in college, my brother recorded a show of the college's show choir off of the house mix (which was being near the stage since he was also singing some of the time), and decided the results were so bad he never shared the tape with anyone.

While your "field recording test" may have been more chaotic than the average recording session, I would not be surprised to hear that it was actually less chaotic than some! ;-)
