In an effort to placate little girls, I wasn't exactly watching the Cardinals / Nationals game early tonight. I was watching Girl vs. Monster on the Disney Channel. But when a commercial would come up, I would flip over to TBS to check the Cardinals score.

So the first time I flipped over, Wainwright gave up a 2-run homer to put the Nats up 3-0.

The next time I checked, it was 6-0. This looked painful.

[livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise had announced that the eleven Oberweis bottles were going back to the store tonight, so we piled in the van and went out for ice cream. And then we came home and I went upstairs and turned on the baseball game while Katie and Julie took a bath.

Oh, look. It's 6-4.

And then Daniel Descalso hit a homer in the top of the eighth and it was suddenly 6-5. Hey! A ballgame had broken out.

The Cardinals closer, Jason Motte, came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth and was less than impressive, giving up two singles to start the inning and eventually another run to make it 7-5. This looked really bad, because the Cards were still having trouble scoring and the Nats pitchers were getting a lot of pitches that PitchTrax thought were a ball outside being called strikes. (Although they were losing a few pitches at the bottom of the zone now and again.)

And then the Cards got baserunners. And then they got a two-out single from Daniel Descalso to tie the game. And then they got another two-out single from Pete Kozma (who was only playing because Furcal was out for the season) and the two-run deficit was suddenly a two-run lead. (And Gretchen told me to go watch the game downstairs, because the girls were going to bed. Period.)

And Motte, who had been all too vulnerable in the eighth inning, retired the side in order in the ninth.

And the Cardinals are going to the NLCS against the Giants.

I'm amazed.

Here we go. Don't expect the same level of courtesy as when we eliminated the Dodgers for you.

Mind you, I'm amazed that the Giants made it through after dropping their home games.

I was having dinner at Chili's last night when the Nats hit the two-run homer, making it 6-0. And I thought, "There's the game." I was surprised the Cards came back to win that one.

And now I'm thinking, "Damn! Why couldn't the Reds have done that?"

I've never heard of Oberweis. I'm guessing it's a beer. And the store will take an incomplete case or half-case back? Wow.

No, it's a dairy. The milk is from local farms and hormone free. The ice cream is really good.

The bottles are half gallon size and take up lots of room.

We were watching the game at work this morning and figured it was over once it was 6-0. Silly us, we forgot they were playing the Cardinals. They really need to stop doing that...

I'm sure one of the big questions will be, "What would have happened if Strausberg wasn't shut down." I, personally, think it's because they let Teddy Roosevelt win the President Race. Forever this shall be known as The Curse Of Teddy Roosevelt!

"...the eleven Oberweis bottles were going back to the store tonight, so we piled in the van and went out for ice cream."

I am at least half convinced that the reason that Oberweis uses glass bottles is to encourage people to return them and then buy something else at that time.

The worst case for me was just before I moved to San Diego the first time. I stopped in the Arlington Heights store to return a few bottles, but couldn't leave without getting a new bottle of egg nog (a personal addiction), which had be consumed and either given to someone else or returned before I left just a day or two later.

And there is no joy in DC, for the Nationals have struck out.

I had a similar thing with the Tiger's game Saturday night. Going into the bottom of the 9th, they were up 4-0 and a lot of the Yankees fans left after the end of the 8th. By the end of the inning, it was tied 4-4. I lasted through the end of the 12th and went to bed. When I got up Sunday, I coulda sworn I read that the Yankees won (especially since the lead story online in Detroit was how badly the Tiger's pitcher had blown it in the 9th!) until Dave came out expressing amazement that the Tigers pulled it out. I obviously needed more caffeine.
