Katie has been agitating to go with me to a Cubs game for a while now. Through the oddest of luck, I had a spare ticket for today's Cubs/Sox game, because among the people I called, I heard:

  • I am out of town running the Nebula Awards
  • I am on call for the NATO summit
  • I am doing something with my wife
  • I have to drive my son to the prom
  • I'm going to a drumming workshop
  • My wife is going to a drumming workshop and I have to watch my son
  • I have to work on a project that I'm behind on
  • My wife is not going to the drumming workshop and I'm going to a Pacers game
  • I'm going to a Capricon meeting (which I skipped)
  • I'm out of town

There may have been others -- I've lost track.

So Katie and I went to the game. Katie proved capable of going to and from the ladies restroom by herself. The fact that it was at the bottom of the stairs for our section helped.

However, I don't think she watched a single play of the game, because there were an almost four-year old pair of mixed twins, boy and girl, directly in front of us. Much entertainment ensued.

    As did:

  • A large unsweetened iced tea from the McDonald's across the street
  • Peanuts (which I mostly ate; Katie mostly sucked salt off the shells like her mother)
  • Cracker Jack (which Katie mostly ate)
  • A tiny Cubs helmet full of soft-serve vanilla
  • A plain hot dog
  • Leftover cotton candy and popcorn from the twins in front

I would not have survived the game without the twins in front of us.

The Cubs didn't survive the game anyway, losing 7-4 in a game not nearly as close as the final score.

We probably won't try this again for a while...

The fact that The White Sox were playing The Cubs this weekend indirectly explains the large number of people I saw yesterday afternoon at the Town and Country (a.k.a. San Diego Con Central) wearing Angles apparel. Not being a fan, I didn't pay enough attention to what was going on to know that this was one of the cross-league weekends.

It sounds like your trip to the ballpark with a kid went better than when I took The Kid to the New Mexico at San Diego State football game last November. He got sick (as in throwing up) during half-time and we had to head home. All that saved me was having to suffer through another Lobo loss in person - something I did plenty of during my years in the UNM band.

We went to the Cedar Rapids Kernels game Thursday night, with both boys (courtesy of free tickets from my husband's employer). Both boys had a great time, and _really_ want to go back again, thanks to some upcoming promo events (yesterday was Star Wars night + fireworks, and today is Candy Drop (after the game, from a helicopter). (We've dodged another trip, so far).

I have to say it was a good game (the Kernels broke a losing streak in the tenth), and both parents got to see a fair bit of the game (we tag-teamed the kids for a while).

Since there is a marked emphasis on family entertainment (at least here), I'd say minor leagues are the way to go when small children are involved :)

SR and I have been going to a Tigers game nearly every summer since she was 6 or so. She's always liked going. We took DB once. He's not at all interested in going again, and J's not all that in to baseball. So SR and I go by ourselves. (I hear that a bunch of us from ABC will be going to a Traverse City Beach Bums game in August. Really minor leagues, there.)
