I went to the Cubs / Giants game tonight with [livejournal.com profile] marniegucciard. The Cubs pitched Ryan Dempster; the Giants pitched Tim Lincecum. Both pitchers threw a gem, but Dempster was just that much better, as Lincecum gave up a single run, while Dempster went to the ninth inning pitching a shutout and having thrown only 80 pitches.

And promptly gave up a leadoff double to pinch-hitter Pat Burrell. I had been discussing the Cubs' relievers with Marnie earlier in the game, explaining that Marmol was the closer, so was likely to pitch the ninth inning if the Cubs were ahead. And with the tying run at second and no one out, Quade came out and lifted Dempster.

I explained that this was a risky move, because Marmol had a tendency to wildness and Dempster had been pitching quite well, so if this blew up, Quade was going to look like an idiot.

Marmol struck out the first batter that he faced, but gave up a game-tying single to the next batter. Somehow, I wasn't surprised.

The good news was that the Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to win it as Aramis Ramirez singled home the winning run from third with two outs.

I guess you can't lose them all.
