There was a bad flame sensor. Apparently, every time that I power cycled the furnace, it reset the microprocessor control so that it would try to start up again and would give us a little bit of heat. The furnace tech (the husband of one of [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise's former coworkers) replaced the sensor and cleaned the furnace.

So far, so good.
