I had been planning to go down to the White Sox vs. Red Sox game down at Comiskey today, but it's over 100 degrees, humid, and there's no shade where I'd be sitting. So I called Bob, my baseball buddy and audio pusher, who had provided the tickets this morning to tell him that I wasn't going to make it. "Thank God!" he replied. He hadn't wanted to disappoint me by not showing up, but he didn't want to go to the game in this heat either.

So [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise and I had a nice breakfast at Chammps. I stopped at CompUSA on the way home and spent 20 bucks on an internal USB flash media reader, because it took me longer than I wanted to find the external one that plugs in (which can now go in the laptop case permanently). It's installed, Gretchen is sewing, and Sam and Bonnie will be here at the top of the hour to join us on an expedition to an air-conditioned theater that's showing Fantastic Four.

This should be much more pleasant.

I think I figured it out.

I take our HP Athlon 64 laptop running Cubase. I buy a Serial ATA card (around $65) to plug into the Cardbus slot. I attach that card to this four bay Serial ATA RAID box at $170. Now, I've got mirrored disk storage, plus the ability to hot swap drives if I need to. Add the MOTU 896HD interface (at around $1000) with eight channels of lightpipe in (to use with the Octopre), two channels of AES/EBU (to use with the Gold Channel), and eight channels of its own analog mic-pre (just in case) for 18 channels of input, plus built-in cue mixing and headphone amp.

That ought to work.
