[livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise and I came up with an idea for another sketch over breakfast, which I'm discussing with Sam (since he and I have a good handle on these characters, having played them before). Gretchen headed off to meet Steve S. for lunch, while I went to Sam's Club to buy bagels and a newspaper (and a CD, DVD, and a set of sheets); then to Home Depot to buy a new fluorescent bulb (yes) and a switched extension cord (no); so then to Menard's, which had both the cord and an 8% off everything sale, leading to the purchase of a new halogen torchiere to replace the bum one in the dining room and a CO detector for the basement (since we never have had one).

I've now wired the remote speakers in the library to the switched cord so that we can move Rolf and Mary's bookcase to its final resting spot and have just filled it with paperback books.

Next, it's off to the basement studio with the CO detector. (Some of these performers just emit a lot of carbon monoxide, I guess...)

As far as I know, no news outlet in the United States has been nearly as stupid as the BBC was when they sent paid hecklers to a Conservative Party campaign meeting where Michael Howard, the party leader, was speaking.

But who knows? It may be the coming thing...

This afternoon, it was back to the basement studio to tweak the new subwoofer and see what it was capable of. I dialed down the volume control on the Mackie HR824s that I use as mains, which allowed me to back off the volume on the subwoofer. I tried listening to PQR, but still wasn't certain if I was hearing enough bass to make things worthwhile.

I burned a fresh copy of the test mix of Digital Acoustic Compilation and headed off with [livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise for a fresh truck test, since I'd completely forgotten where I'd left this mix.
Truck test results inside )
When we got home, Gretchen handed me the Fleetwood Mac 2-CD set and I took it down to the basement and ripped a copy of The Chain so I could play it through the studio sound system and see how the subwoofer behaved. Gretchen came down after I started playing the song and declared the subwoofer a success.

"If the pots and pans in the kitchen are rattling, there's enough bass."

I'll buy that.
