A lady from the library paid a visit to Katie's preschool on Thursday and gave her a coupon that would get her a prize if she took it to the Des Plaines Public Library. And that was where we went after lunch today.

Now, we had never set foot in the library in the years since we'd moved to town (during which time they actually built the new library), because we've become relentless buyers of books. But it seemed that the time had come.

[livejournal.com profile] daisy_knotwise stopped at the front desk to get a library card while I shepherded Katie and Julie off to the second floor which is entirely devoted, it seems, to the children's section, complete with computers to access children's games, a pirate ship, and a Duplo table. Oh, yes, and more children's books than the girls had ever seen in one place. And other children. The girls were delighted and mostly within a reasonable volume range for a library, although I see why the children's section is on a separate floor. :)

We came home with seven borrowed books and two library cards, as I grabbed one when we went back downstairs. I suppose it is still possible to borrow books.

I'd forgotten.

I went to the library myself today, to borrow the score for a show on my "might audition" list. It had been so long that I was no longer in their records, and had to a apply for a new library card.

We generally make a weekly pilgrimage to the Library. There are points where I swear we have more of the library's books than they do. I'm personally a little dismayed over how much of the space is given over to non-books, but I freely admit I may be a relic.

Oh yes,

Des Plaines Public Library is a very nice building. If I remember correctly you can see the kids "reading" area from the third floor balcony.

I've been visiting the Madison N.H. public library on Tuesdays lately, because that's the day interlibrary loan books arrive. It has helped me catch up on my Hugo Nomination reading list.

I happily rediscover the library every so often myself :).

I'm somewhat embarrassed that I haven't borrowed a book from a library in decades and have never been to the one I pay property taxes to. I read so slowly that I often will not finish a single book in the time one's allowed to keep a library book. At that rate, the few books I buy and the ones [livejournal.com profile] birder2 buys that I want to read just see me getting ever further behind.

Between the budget & the kids, we've been visiting the library a LOT the last several years. And now, we've discovered the ebook part of the library, my reading has, well, gotten a lot more extensive (like, 38 books so far this year, nearly all ebooks; that's not counting various shorts & beta reads)

David is taking after his parents, as he generally has 3 to 5 books checked out from the school library at any given time :)

And aren't you the author of "library card"?

I keep buying books. I run out of space to put them & swear I'll get books from the library instead, but somehow the stack I own keeps growing. I am in our public library once a month for the Audubon meeting there and I usually manage to come home with some library books, and I keep borrowing books from the OLLI library where I am twice a week, so it's not as though I don't USE the libraries.
