Ick

I went to Hot Dog Island for lunch and arrived just before the police showed up and barricaded the side street that leads to the parking lot. The main street was already blocked by a police car, because there was a terrible accident at Dempster and Niles Center Road. I'm told by an employee of one of the nearby stores that a Mustang convertible was traveling at high speed eastbound on Dempster and plowed into a number of cars that were waiting for the light to change. Cars flipped as a result and if no one is dead, it's a miracle. The impression I got was that there hadn't been any miracles forthcoming.

When I left, the street was still blocked and I had to go down an alley and out through the Skokie Swift parking lot. I suspect it'll be blocked for a good while longer.

Apologies in advance for the flippancy here, but I read the title and the first clause above and reacted, "Yeah, that's what I think of hot dogs, but why did you go there for lunch in the first place?"

That is the one that used to be Irvings? At Dempster and Bronx? Yeah, that one is a pain to get in and out of if they are blocking streets.

Been many years since I have been to that place. I guess Herms is just more convenient now that I live in Evanston and no longer in Skokie :)

Ack, you are right. It was Mage's. I keep thinking of it as Irvings because the guy who owned Mage's was Irving's son. Dad's hot dog places are still around, but the son was not so successful.

I don't know Hot Dog Island. Hot Doug's, on the other hand, is fabulous.

Hot Dog Island is a good Chicago hot dog stand with a flame grill, which produces hamburgers that I rather like. They also serve fresh-cut french fries, which I like rather more than my doctor approves of...
