Yet Another Truck Test

I made some more fixes to the mix for Tom Smith and His Digital Acoustic Compilation and daisy_knotwise and I headed out to give them the truck test. I think we're getting asymptotically close to done. There are just a few level problems to fix and I think we're home free.

At this point, I Want to Be Peter Lorre, Domino Death, 307 Ale, and Storm Dancing are a hair too loud. Temperature of Revenge and PQR are a hair too soft. Hellraiser needs a tweak to the guitar and reverb (which is really the only mixing tweak left). Everyone else is just right.

Question: I've noticed that conversation and patter tend to be way low. A good example is the intro to ...Peter Lorre, which has me sitting on the volume control until the first chords, to raise and then lower the volume. (Domino Death is another that suffers from the issue.) Is that fixable, and was that one of the fixes you've done?

Just curious, and looking forward to the rerelease, regardless.

I've certainly been working on it. Whether I'm successful will have to be in the judgment of the listener. :)

Some of the patter was intentionally low on the fade-in, by the way, because it didn't actually relate to anything in the vicinity. For instance, the patter on Peter Lorre starts out, "This is especially appropriate after that last one," which is, of course, especially inappropriate since it's the first song on the CD.

*nod* I know that comment well. The thing is, regardless of the content, the levels difference drives me nuts and I crank it in the nearly inaudible spots. Not a problem, except for driving or some work times, but annoying almost every time.

Which of course requires the question - clip that sentence and bump the remaining intro? Or retain it, inaccuracy and all?

It took me a minute. I didn't know that anyone did real live testing of sound levels. (Oh, and from someone who listens to filk CDs while driving most of the time.... THANK YOU!)
