If I understand correctly, last night's Presidential press conference was originally scheduled for 7:30 CT. But when I sat down for dinner and flipped on the TV shortly before that, I found that the press conference had actually started at 7:00 CT.

I can only assume that this is because NBC would have been unwilling to preempt Friends, but was deliriously happy to preempt both Joey and Will and Grace. I'm just surprised that no one had told the White House about this earlier.

On MPR this morning, they reported that ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX all asked that the press conference be moved from 8:30 ET to 8:00 ET. It's Sweeps Week. When the conference ran over an hour, three of them dropped it anyway (I don't remember which one stayed, but it wasn't FOX) and went to their normal programming at 9:00 ET.

Whereas I watched episodes two and three of the new Dr. Who season. I think that was likely the correct thing to do.

From the Washington Post (http://tinyurl.com/9ogkb):
Finally -- after CBS and NBC had already cut him off -- Bush acknowledged what was going on. He said he would take one more question, quipping, "I don't want to cut into some of the TV shows getting ready to air -- for the sake of the economy." The White House press corps twittered.

Thinking of the lost ad revenues, one network exec retorted to The TV Column: "He took tens of millions out of the economy tonight."

And from the same article came the amusing mention that this is TV-Turnoff week, when we're supposed to try and give up TV watching for a week and engage in supposedly more productive pursuits.

(But hey, I get plenty done in front of the tube...that's when I pay bills and balance checkbooks...)
