By the time that Gretchen finished scrawling the lyrics we wrote, it was past 1 AM. And it is either a bad thing or a good thing, depending on exactly how you feel about Lord of the Rings and Jimmy Buffett.
Words by: Gretchen and Bill Roper
Music by: Jimmy Buffett (Son of a Son of a Sailor)
As a son of a son of Isildur,
I went out to live in the forest.
The thought of the crown was just bringing me down
So I ignored all the voices in chorus.
I lived off the land just the way that I planned
And wandered the fields as a Ranger
Wherever I’d go, well then, no one would know
Me as anything more than a stranger.
I’m a son of a son, son of a son,
Son of a son of Isildur.
Son of a sword, easily bored,
A much better fighter than builder.
I was caught in a spell cast in Rivendell
By a woman I still see in visions.
She’s the daughter of Elves and she told me herself
She’d be making a mortal decision.
And I know Lady G from Lothlorian sees
All the world there reflected in water.
So I’m rejecting the woo that poor Eowyn threw
‘Cause I know that G’d know if I caught her.
March off to fight all the Orcs in the night
With the fellowship we have assembled.
Hobbits and Dwarves and ghosts from the wharves
And the Ents making Saruman tremble.
I’m a son of a son, son of a son,
Son of a son of Isildur.
So let Arwen know that my death wasn’t so
‘Cause I know if it was, it’d’ve killed her.
I’m a son of a son, son of a son,
Son of the last king of Gondor.
But it won’t mean a thing if we can’t break the Ring
And Mt. Doom is too damn far to wander.
Sweet

This is Simmons, checking in
Date: 2005-01-30 11:26 pm (UTC)I can seek Mike Longcor singing it in a skit. We'd have some little kid follow him around carrying a crown and repeated saying "Excuse me, sir, is this your crown?"

Isn't there an excess syllable in that second line, compared to the other verses? (I'm not familiar with the original either.)

Date: 2005-01-30 03:43 pm (UTC)I like both and still think your song is brilliant. Somewhat disturbing, however, is the other song that the second-last line suggests: It Don't Mean a Thing (If We Can't Break That Ring). :-)
