"Once upon a time, history was made on the battlefield. Heroes chose to fight for justice...for honor...for glory and for faith...for survival. And, in time...all the fighting was done. With the help of interstellar alliances, the Earth entered a millennium of utopian peace.

Now, at the dawn of the 31st century, all we, our parents, and their parents have ever known is security, stability, and order.

We're so sick of it, we could scream.

And we are Legion."

-- Legion of Super Heroes #1

Mark Waid and Barry Kitson have just taken over the most unkillable series in the history of DC comics. And the Legion is back.

It's a reboot. That's not a great surprise, even before I saw the end of the Teen Titans/LSH crossover special a few months back. The Legion's continuity has been a mess for a long time, despite two earlier attempts at patches -- one of which Mark Waid edited. After KC Carlson left as editor several years after the most recent reboot, the series has trended downhill rapidly, the worst of which was -- in my opinion as a Legion fan of long standing -- the grim and gritty treatment by Abnett, Lanning, and Coipel that finally led to my dropping a book that I used to wait for anxiously each month.

I don't feel like giving a lot away here and I won't. But if you were ever a fan of the Legion, you should read this book.

Because the Legion is back.

Or more specifically, my Legion is back.

I started by quoting the first lines of the book; now I'll quote the ending, because it's not a spoiler.

"There are a lot of cool things about being with the Legion, my friend, but never forget the coolest. They're not here because of us. We're here because of them."

It sounds like the fifth series should be quite entertaining! I just wish the DC Encyclopedia from DK that just came out would use the correct dates for a lot of the character and subgroup debuts...they used the "rebooted" dates for several--most, in fact. Speaking of which, I wonder if the Legion of Substitute Heroes will return?

There are few people I'd trust more to attempt a remount of the Legion than Mark Waid. Should be interesting!
