It was about Wednesday morning, 3 AM. (Seems appropriate somehow. Thanks, Paul.) I would be getting up an hour or two earlier than usual to go down to McCormick Place for a Microsoft DevDays presentation for work. But nature called and woke me up, so I shuffled off to the bathroom, and then back to bed.
And a couple of lines popped into my head. And grumbled, and bitched, and moaned, and said, Go write me down before you forget me, you idiot! Ok, fine. Back out of bed, into the office, find paper and pen, scrawl the lines, crawl back into bed.
By the way, here's the next couplet.
I'm going back to sleep.
No, you're not.
No, I wasn't. Grabbed the paper and pen, wandered into the library, and grabbed Gretchen's guitar, since it was handy and mine wasn't. About an hour later, I had the chorus, the tune for the chorus, and a possible tune for the verse.
Back to bed. I slept. Mostly.
Last night, I stayed up late and finished the song. The tune for the verse ended up getting discarded, but everything else stayed intact, with a couple of minor tweaks.
And here it is:

Love at First Sight
Love’ll catch you without warning.
Love’ll find you on a sunny morning.
Or maybe some time on a gray afternoon.
Or even later by the light of the moon.
Love is special, love is grand.
Love is something I still don’t understand,
But I know there’s nothing my love won’t do
Since the day I found that my love was you.
(Chorus)
Was it love at first sight?
Did you remember both ways?
A little memory from tomorrow
Reaching back for today?
Was it love at first sight?
Did you try to forget
A vagrant memory from a future
That had not happened yet
In our love at first sight?
Stronger forces set in motion.
Wasn’t magic or some number nine potion.
Just a feeling that I needed to know
What it was that set your eyes all a-glow.
I was trying to remember
Things I’d never known before that September.
Sitting, talking there and hoping to find
Things that tickled at the back of my mind.
(Chorus)
(Bridge)
There’s a message from tomorrow
From a love that wants to be.
From possible to probable
To find you here with me.
(Chorus)
There is action and reaction
And no way we can deny the attraction.
Sitting, smiling with our heads spinning round.
That kind of love’ll turn your life upside down.
I know someday a little thought’ll
Drop a message in a temporal bottle.
Send it floating up the current of time,
So we’ll know that you will always be mine.
(Chorus twice)
It was love at first sight.
Love at first sight.
