When I fly to a convention, I usually take my trusty Guild 6-string and try to carry it on. This has become more of a hit-or-miss proposition lately, as flights are getting more full. The original 20+ year old case was giving up the ghost, so I picked up a new Martin case from Terry at Guitar Works a few months ago.

However, [livejournal.com profile] allisona was asking about hard-shell cases and when I went Googling, I found that Gator now makes a flight-rated dreadnought case that isn't huge and hard to handle. Cool!

So I ran up to Gand and ordered one over lunch so I'll have it in time for GAFilk. My guitar and I will both be much happier...

Good subject line. :)

So, do the *airlines* consider it a flight rated case, or just the manufacturer? Part of the reason I'm not willing to fly with a guitar is the stories that no matter how it's packaged, the airlines tell you you can sign a waiver of liability agreeing that it's "improperly packaged", so they don't have to pay when they break it, or else you don't fly.

I've only ever had Northwest make me do this, and only ever flying out of CMI. And only if you got one particular woman checking you in. I've flown transatlantically with my cases and never had to sign a waiver.

Interesting. I really need a new case for my Tak - I've pretty much decided that *neither* of my two non-Taylor cases are flight-worthy any more. I wonder when your case will come; I'd love to take a look at it (and pick it up to see how heavy it feels...) before buying a new case.

Oh yeah, I meant to mention in my earlier comment that the writeup for the case doesn't say how much the thing actually weighs (or at least I don't see it). It says half of what other flight cases weigh, but since I don't know what cases they're talking about and what they weigh, that means little. (Half the weight of [livejournal.com profile] fredcritter's case would still be an awful lot to carry around.)

Flying home from Ohio to Toronto after OVFF was the first time I've ever been asked to sign a guitar waiver- it kind of caught me off-guard. It was an Air Canada flight, though I forget the affiliated American airline. I wasn't asked to sign one between Toronto and Ohio.
