Up a Third

I've been practicing the new song for my concert at Chambanacon, because it's embarrassing when you get up on the risers and discover that you have no idea of what you're doing. Having a fake book version of the lyrics and chords on a music stand helps a lot, of course, but there's that matter of hitting the correct note. But that's easy, right, because the chords are there to guide you.

The first chord in the song is AMaj7. The first sung note in the song is C#, which is the third for that chord. Let's just beat that into my head now.

The first chord in the chorus is D6. The first sung note in the chorus is F#, which is the third for that chord. Because, sure, why not?

Practice, practice, practice...

Now I'm wondering what key the song is in.

You could arpeggiate to those notes a little on the guitar before you get to the part where you sing them if that helps. (I do that for choir when I’m accompanying them.)

I think it’s in A major. That Amaj7 would have a G-sharp in it.

Bill has a few songs in that key. (Wesley and I—mostly Wesley right now—are working on the compilation songbook right now.)
