I flipped over and caught the end of the Cubs game vs. the Braves tonight, which did not go at all well for the Cubs, who lost the lead, retook the lead, blew the lead, retook the lead, and then lost the game in extra innings. This was not particularly notable, given the current state of the Cubs bullpen and the team they were playing against and it has (sadly) dropped the Cubs back out of the third wild card position.

But the thing I found notable was the attitude of the Cubs announcers during the bottom of the 10th. Acuna had just tied up the game with a single and pretty much everyone in the park and watching on TV was expecting him to try to steal second base with Albies up. And he did.

This was notably Acuna's 70th stolen base of the season to go along with his 41 home runs, a round number 40/70 combo that no one in baseball has ever managed before. I mean, a *lot* of guys have managed to hit 60 homers in a season, but the most stolen bases (other than Acuna this year) in a season for someone with 40 homers is *46*. This is uncharted territory.

So after stealing the base, Acuna was granted time out. He then picked up the base from the field and held it up for the cheering fans. A groundskeeper came out, took the historic base from him, and replaced it with another one that they had available to use in such a case.

And the Cubs announcers decided to grump about this, asking why this celebration couldn't wait until after the game. Really? In any case, the delay was only about a minute and only served to delay the Cubs losing when Albies singled Acuna home.

I somehow suspect that a lot of the grumpiness was due to the announcers staring another loss in the face. You just *knew* at that point that there was nothing left to go right for the Cubs tonight.

Ah, well.

The Cubs can get into the playoffs, but they are going to need to win at least one more game than the Marlins.

Assuming that the Reds don't find a way to crawl back into this...
